Here at Nettrix thinking outside the box is imperative. Using all the tools available is key to what we do. Achieving results. I was snooping around Google recently and came across Google's Contextual Targeting Tool, now we don't tend to deal with PPC all that much but we decided to see what use it could prove to be for our organic SEO campaigns.
Just at a glance we could see it could benefit sites with e-commerce functionality most of all because it groups keywords together under bigger industry targeted related phrases – a broader phrase if you will. Let's see how.
Imagine I'm going to be setting-up an online sports wear store, so I type in the keyword sportswear. It shows up a few results which include mens sportswear and womens sportswear, this isn't the most helpful as I already know my site will contain two main sections (mens and womens).
Then I went into a bit more depth and typed in 'mens sportswear' and from there it gave some excellent results which gave me a solid indication of how to tailor the structure of the site. It listed things like cheap mens sportswear and mens sports shorts. This was a good start but not entirely what I was needing.
It also listed other groups including brands and keywords that included the word discount. Going a little further into it I could acquire great phrases for the womens section such as womens sports clothing, womens tracksuits and tracksuits for women, cheap sportswear for women and cheap sportswear women.
In the tracksuit section I found things like:
mens tracksuits, mens tracksuit, velour tracksuits, velour tracksuit
This was perfect as I could now run these through the Adwords Keyword tool and see what is going to be most suitable for my SEO campaign, the site structure and help me in dividing the mens and womens keywords etc.
In spite of the Contextual Targeting tool (CTT) not showing search volumes it can definitely help play a part in influencing how to structure a site's flow and galvanise SEO in the initial stages. On top of that, it can generate excellent keyword ideas that will help devise a campaign that is effective and hopefully generate traffic. You could do a lot worse by ignoring the SEO benefits of the CTT.
